Federal health authorities say a nationwide outbreak of listeria in Colorado cantaloupes is now responsible for 21 deaths and the number may continue to grow. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday reported new deaths in Indiana and New York. The agency previously reported five deaths in Colorado, five in New Mexico, two in Texas, two in Kansas and one each in Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. CDC said it is also aware of one miscarriage associated with the outbreak.  MARY CLARE JALONICK, AP , Yahoo News  10/10/2011

An Islamic woman from California has filed a lawsuit against Southwest Airlines after she was removed from a plane, accused of terrorist activity. She claims in her suit that the flight attendant thought she heard the plaintiff say "it's a go," became suspicious and kicked her off the flight. The woman said she actually said "I have to go." She is accusing the airline of discrimination.  Philip Caulfield, New York Daily News  10/06/2011

States Vary Widely in Reporting Foodborne Illnesses

Inconsistent reporting of foodborne illnesses such as listeria, salmonella and E. coli leaves large portions of the country vulnerable to the spread of potentially deadly outbreaks before health officials can identify their causes and recall contaminated foods. These three bacteria have caused at least 12 multi-state outbreaks this year, including the listeria infection traced to Jensen Farms’ cantaloupe. But salmonella is the leader, accounting for nearly 60 percent of the multi-state outbreaks reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the past five years. A News21 analysis of salmonella reporting practices found that differences across the country put residents of the worst-performing states at risk and undermine national outbreak surveillance.  Max Levy, Joe Yerardi and Dustin Volz, The Washington Post  10/10/2011

Farmers Insurance to Raise Rates 10% for Half its Texas Homeowners

spacer image

Farmers Insurance indicated Friday that it will raise homeowner premiums by nearly 10 percent next year for about half of its customers in North Texas and across the state. The higher rates, to take effect March 16, would affect about 350,000 Farmers customers who have either a Texas Family Home Policy or a Next Generation Home Policy. The Next Generation policy debuted in the state in early 2010. Farmers last raised home insurance rates in Texas in March of this year, an increase of 3.9 percent.  TERRENCE STUTZ, The Dallas Morning News  10/10/2011
