Editorial: How Texas' Workers' Comp Laws Endanger Many Workers |
Texas Texas workers comp opt-out initiative may seem good for companies, but it's problematic for workers. Texas needs to fix the workers comp system, and lawmakers should reconsider mandating employer participation. And let Texas experience serve as a lesson to others states considering opt outs. The system must be strong, but it must also be fair. Editors, The Dallas Morning News 10/26/2015 |

A Family Battles Big Oil |
By Leon Ramirez Jr. supported by the ruling of an exasperated judge, petroleum companies owe them millions of dollars for wells drilled on property inherited from their grandmother. The main defendant, ConocoPhillips of Houston, has refused to pay, filing multiple appeals including one to the state Supreme Court. A co-defendant, EOG, also of Houston, has settled its role. Judge Joe Lopez of 49th state district court has chastised lawyers for ConocoPhillips and other parties for making redundant attacks "under the disguise of allegedly newly discovered evidence." Emails: Prosecutors Got Texas Mutual "Great Publicity" |
Travis County prosecutors say the money they get each year from a large insurance company to prosecute workers' compensation fraud helps both consumers and businesses by holding down premiums and maintaining a stable market for employers. But behind the scenes, top officials in the district attorney office are highlighting other benefits: They say they're generating a lot of money and good PR for Texas Mutual Insurance Company. Emails obtained by The Texas Tribune and the Austin American-Statesman show officials from the DA's office have even used those claims to ask Texas Mutual for more money to prosecute the company's fraud cases. Apple Faces Class Action Suit over New Wi-Fi Feature |
Some iPhone users are hoping to be reimbursed for overage charges caused by a new feature, Wi-Fi Assist, which is turned on automatically when you upgrade to iOS9. Without warning, the feature allegedly switches to using cellular data when the device does not have a strong Wi-Fi signal, which can result in significant increases in charges. Although Apple eventually posted instructions on its website on how to disable the default setting, the suit claims damages should be awarded as result of Apples violation of the state Unfair Competition and False Advertising Laws.
