The school and its coaches have been accused of "not ensuring the safety" of one of the football team's linebackers. The lawsuit alleges that school officials urged the player to continue playing after he suffered a shoulder injury. The lawsuit states that the player was told by the school that "he needed to sign a release from his scholarship or risk other repercussions," clearing the school of any liability. The school's head football coach, Tim Beckman, was fired in August of 2015 and an investigation determined that he pressured hurt players to continue playing the sport. The lawsuit was filed against celebrity stylist Chaz Dean and marketer Guthy-Renker over the products, which have reportedly caused hair loss and scalp irritation. A federal judge in Los Angeles granted preliminary approval of the lawsuit settlement, but it still requires final approval by a U.S. District Court judge. The preliminary settlement means that six million people may be eligible for an award of up to $20,000. The air bags tend to degrade more rapidly in hot, humid climates, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the city has one of the lowest repair rates in such environments.
