Hospital Will Pay Duncan's Medical Bills, Set up Charity

Attorneys representing the family of Ebola victim Thomas Eric Duncan said Wednesday the hospital that treated him will pay his relatives an undisclosed sum and create a charitable foundation in his name. During a news conference Wednesday, the family's attorney said Texas Health Resources has set up a charitable trust in honor of Duncan to help Ebola victims in West Africa. Besides a settlement that will help take care of Duncan's four kids, the hospital system has also agreed to pay for the medical care he received. The family says the CEO of Texas Health Resources has personally written a letter to apologize and they don't believe the case had anything to do with race or insurance coverage, just inadequate policies and procedures in the face of treating Ebola.

With the threat of a potential class action lawsuit looming, a Pennsylvania landfill has laid out a plan to solve an odor issue affecting nearby residents. The landfill in Tullytown has made numerous changes in order to stop the offensive smells that spurred the potential class action lawsuit by Burlington County residents. The changes made by the landfill include decreasing waste volume by 20 percent and sewer sludge by 66 percent as well as the delivery route for drivers carrying sludge and the times at which they can deliver it to the landfill. A local law firm sent out letters to residents seeking more participants in the class action lawsuit.

Apple Inc is facing a lawsuit over text messages that were not received by users who switched to Android phones. A U.S. District from San Jose, California has let the lawsuit, which seeks class action status and unspecified damages, move forward. According to the lawsuit, Apple employed a message blocking system that prevented users who switched from iPhones to Android phones from receiving text messages. While some of the lawsuit's claims were dismissed, the case will move forward in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California.
