Pennsylvania Woman Awarded $95.6M After 2013 Center City Building Collapse

On Thursday, May 26, 2017, Mariya Plekan, a woman who lost the lower half of her body during the collapse of the Center City building in Philadelphia, was awarded $96.5M for the horrific injuries she sustained in the tragedy. The decision followed a $257 million settlement with all the victims of the collapse and the defendants, the Salvation Army, where victims were shopping and working, and Richard Basciano, who owned the building. According to Ms. million's attorney, Andy Stern, this was the largest recovery for an injured plaintiff in Pennsylvania history.

A Hopkins County Jury Awards in Excess of $8M in Injury Case

A Hopkins County jury returned a verdict of what will be in excess of $8-million last week in the 62nd District court. Charles Knighton, a Franklin County truck driver, was unloading a feed truck into a hopper train car at the Blacklands Railroad in Mount Vernon, Texas. Evidence showed that the Blacklands conductor gave permission for Knighton to get up on top of the car and then move the train without notice. Knighton suffered horrific injuries, falling over 15ft. and landing on the train coupling between cars. He suffered a pelvic injury with permanent disabling nerve loss and physical impairment among other injuries.

Accused South Carolina Serial Killer Facing Civil Suits

Todd Kohlhepp, an accused serial killer from South Carolina, appeared last Friday in Spartanburg County Court to face civil lawsuits. The real estate agent is charged with killing seven people and kidnapping one woman. One lawsuit was filed by the kidnapping victim who was held by the defendant for two months on his property. According to the lawsuit, the woman was cleaning a property when Kohlhepp drew a firearm and held her hostage. The other lawsuits were filed by the families of individuals killed by the defendant and a fencing company which Kohlhepp allegedly failed to pay for services.

Oregon Widow Sues Flight School After Fatal Crash

The wife of an Oregon man who was killed in a helicopter accident has filed a lawsuit against the flight school that was instructing her husband. The lawsuit was filed Monday in Yamhill County against Precision Aviation Training, the company that was instructing the plaintiff's husband at the time of the crash. According to the complaint, the crash took place on July 1, 2015, during the man's first night flight, which was not part of the program curriculum. Additionally, the flight instructor had been certified for only 30 days at the time of the crash. Both the plaintiff's husband and the flight instructor were killed in the crash.
