Study

Study Finds Heart Drug Increases Risk for Dementia

A new study has shown that a popular drug for the treatment of a heart condition called atrial fibrillation may cause a heightened risk of dementia. Researchers discovered that "patients on the clot-preventing drug warfarin showed a higher dementia risk if their blood levels of the medication were frequently too high or too low." The study also found that patients who took warfarin for other medical reasons were also at a risk for dementia. According to the Heart Rhythm Society, atrial fibrillation affects about 3 million adults in the U.S.

Uber to Face Women's Sexual Assault Lawsuits

A federal judge has ruled that two women can file suit against Uber over their alleged sexual assaults. The lawsuits were filed by a woman in Boston and a woman in South Carolina. Both of the women allege that they were sexually assaulted by their Uber drivers. The driver from Boston was convicted earlier this year of assault and battery. The South Carolina driver was arrested last year on suspicion of kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct. The federal judge over the case dismissed Uber's request for dismissal and said the women could pursue punitive damages and a fraud claim against the company.

Illinois Mother Files Suit Over Death of Son Trapped Between Trailers

A woman from Joliet, Illinois, has filed a lawsuit over the death of her son who was crushed between two vehicles. The 22-year-old was killed when he became pinned between two trailers while attempting to move a trailer that was stuck in the snow and ice at Intermodal Services of America. The lawsuit names as defendants the Union Pacific Railroad, CenterPoint Properties and Caleast Centerpoint. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants are responsible under "premises liability" for failing to inspect or safeguard the yard.

Second Lawsuit Filed Against Badger Guns

A second lawsuit is set for trial against a U.S. gun shop after a jury in October found the store negligently sold a gun used to injure two Milwaukee police officers. The new case involves two different injured officers who allege that owners of Badger Guns negligently sold the gun used to wound them in 2007.

Federal food safety regulators say the latest expansion by the largest poultry producer in the U.S. includes a variety of chicken products potentially contaminated with foreign materials.
