Man Sues FL Hospital After His Leg Found in the Garbage

A south Florida man is suing a hospital for emotional distress, saying his leg was amputated and thrown in the garbage with his name tag still on it. John Timiriasieff, 56, had his right leg amputated below the knee in October at Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables. "Rather than properly disposing of the plaintiff's limb as expected and as required by Florida law, Doctors Hospital threw the Plaintiff's amputated limb into the garbage, with tags indicating it belonged to the Plaintiff," according to the lawsuit filed on Wednesday in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court. A month later, Timiriasieff said his family was contacted by homicide detectives investigating if he had been the victim of foul play. When the family went back to the hospital to find out what happened, they were told it would "provide no explanation for what had occurred," the lawsuit said.

IKEA has expanded a recall on its SULTAN and VYSSA crib mattresses due to a risk of entrapment. The recall states that "the crib mattresses could create a gap between the mattress and crib ends larger than allowed by federal regulations, posing an entrapment hazard to infants." The recall includes about 300,000 of the crib mattresses in the United States and about 44,000 in Canada. IKEA has received reports of two incidents involving children trapped by a mattress. Neither of the incidents resulted in injury.

The Uphill Battle to Better Regulate Formaldehyde
spacer image
A decade after emergency trailers meant to shelter Hurricane Katrina victims instead caused burning eyes, sore throats and other more serious ailments, the Environmental Protection Agency is on the verge of regulating the culprit: formaldehyde, a chemical that can be found in commonplace things like clothes and furniture. But an unusual assortment of players, including furniture makers, the Chinese government, Republicans from states with a large base of furniture manufacturing and even some Democrats who championed early regulatory efforts, have questioned the E.P.A. proposal. The sustained opposition has held sway, as the agency is now preparing to ease key testing requirements before it releases the landmark federal health standard.

Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Over Doctor's Death

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the son of a Louisiana doctor who was shot to death by his wife. The lawsuit was filed in state District Court in Covington on Friday by the son of the doctor, who alleges that his father was "unlawfully, illegally and unjustifiably shot twice and killed by his wife." The lawsuit contends that the two shots fired at the doctor did not immediately kill him, but that he remained on the floor of his garage while his wife called the authorities. Also named as defendant in the lawsuit is an unidentified insurance company.
