Click on the headline to learn more and register. | Texas Tribune Daily Brief | | Authorities Investigating Source of Medical Waste in River | | Authorities were trying Tuesday to find who dumped medical waste that includes syringes and vials in the Arkansas River in eastern Oklahoma.The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality said a 'significant amount' of waste had been discovered in the past few days washed up near Ralston. The agency said it's not known what was in the vials or syringes. Patient ID bracelets were also found. The 76-year-old alleges that he suffered significant harm as a result of the illness he contracted while at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center. The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and is the fifth suit filed in connection with the bacterial outbreak. Seven people were infected with carbapenem-resistant enterobacteria, two of whom later died. The lawsuit alleged that the company fraudulently portrayed itself as a legitimate company, when it was actually an illegal pyramid scheme. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Dale Fischer in Los Angeles said that the plaintiffs in the lawsuit failed to show that the company had fraudulently inflated its stock price. The lead plaintiffs in the lawsuit, Oklahoma Firefighters Pension and Retirement System and the City of Atlanta Firefighters' Pension Fund, are considering whether to amend the lawsuit. According to the lawsuit, filed in Texas state court, 47 people and family trusts invested nearly $11.5 million in real estate funds which were misused by the firm. The plaintiffs allege that the firm used the funds to fund operations, rather than repaying its investors. Debby Woodin, The Joplin Globe 03/17/2015 | Read Article: The Joplin Globe | Federal Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Over Mayflower Oil Spill | | A federal class-action lawsuit against Exxon Mobil Corporation over a 2013 crude oil spill in central Arkansas has been dismissed by a federal judge, who acknowledged in his ruling that his decision seems unfair. U.S. District Judge Brian Miller on Tuesday dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled. Miller said in a 22-page ruling that he was incorrect in granting class-action status in the case and concluded that the easement contracts Exxon Mobil held with the property owners do not require the company to maintain the pipeline.
