Consumer Agency Posts Complaints Against Banks

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released thousands of complaints Thursday from disgruntled customers of banks, credit card companies and other providers of financial services. The bureau posted a database of the grievances on its website over vehement protests from the financial industry. The database contains 7,700 complaints filed online by people who agreed to air their complaints publicly. The individual grievances and the public database were created despite repeated protests from the financial services industry. The American Bankers Association, which has been against the database since the bureau proposed it last year, said the database would be "a purveyor of at best unsubstantiated, and potentially false, information."

Judge Rules in Favor of Oklahoma in Execution Lawsuit

An Oklahoma federal judge has ruled in favor of the state in a lawsuit filed by the family of an inmate who died in a controversial execution in April 2014. The family of the man filed suit against the state after the man was executed using a mixture of drugs never before used in a state execution. The lawsuit alleged that the use of the drugs, which it noted were ineffective as a sedative, violated the inmate's constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment.

A jury on Thursday awarded more than $5 million to the family of a 15-year-old boy who died at a Mission Viejo care facility when staff failed to give him his anti-seizure medication and left him with a caregiver who had no CPR training. The Orange County Superior Court jury deliberated for about five hours before finding that Lonika Homes, Inc., which operates several assisted care facilities in the Mission Viejo area, was negligent in the death of Kevin Barr, who died on Feb. 7, 2012.

A New Jersey high school student has filed a lawsuit after her SAT scores were thrown out due to a typo on the test. The class action lawsuit was filed against the creators and administrators of the exam that the plaintiff took on June 6. The lawsuit was filed last week in federal court in New Jersey and contends that the defendants are guilty of breach of contract and negligence. The lawsuit names the College Board, the group that oversees the exams, and the Educational Testing Service, which administers the exams as defendants.
