Construction Worker Awarded $5.5M in Suit Over Crushed Leg
spacer image
$5.5 million dollars was awarded last week to a construction worker who filed suit against Niagara County, New York, after his leg was crushed at Niagara County Community College. The construction worker will receive less than two-thirds of the large settlement, according to his attorney. The incident took place in 2008 when the plaintiff was helping transport stacks of large replacement windows on a flatbed trailer on the college campus. His leg was crushed when several of the heavy windows fell over onto him. The college is seeking reimbursement for the settlement amount from two insurance companies.

$20M Lawsuit Says Mall Security Chased Shoplifter to Death
spacer image
A Maryland family has filed a $20 million lawsuit alleging that their family member was chased to death by a shopping mall security guard. In February, the family filed suit against Valor Security Services and Mydatt Services in Baltimore City Circuit Court. The death took place when mall security guards chased the suspected shoplifter into a pond outside the mall, where he drowned. The defendants have been denied a request to have the lawsuit transferred to Anne Arundel Circuit Court and allowed the dispute to move forward to trial. A trial date has not yet been set.

Jury Awards Dallas Parents $142M After Infant Suffocates at Day Care
spacer image
A Dallas County jury on Thursday awarded $142 million to the parents of a baby who suffocated after being swaddled for a nap at day care. Zac and Heather Lytle sued after their 7-month-old son, Roger, was found face down and unresponsive at a home child care facility in north Oak Cliff in 2014. They accused All In The Family Child Care Services of negligence, in part because Texas day care facilities are prohibited from swaddling infants, or wrapping them snugly in cloth, for naps. The Lytles had asked the jury for $7 million. Jurors deliberated for nearly a day before coming back with their verdict, more than 20 times larger.

Actor Anton Yelchin's Death Shines Light on Dangerous Jeep Defect
spacer image
The recent death of actor Anton Yelchin, who was crushed to death by his Jeep Grand Cherokee, has brought to light an existing issue with Jeep vehicles. Last August, federal regulators flagged the issue, but nearly a year later, there has not been a solution despite a recall notice. The electronic gearshift in the vehicles can be confusing to drivers who believe they are in park, when actually in neutral. The issue has been linked to hundreds of accidents and dozens of injuries.
