Share with your FB friends: Perils of ‘Bounce Houses’

spacer image

NY accident, other mishaps illuminate perils of inconsistently regulated ‘bounce houses’, AP 6-7-11. They look like harmless fun — fluffy, inflated castles, ships and slides filled with children jumping around carelessly, their parents letting their guard down a bit during playtime. But an accident that sent three of the huge toys aloft on a breezy afternoon on New York’s Long Island, left a woman seriously injured and hurt 12 other people is drawing attention to the little-known hazards of the inflatable playthings sometimes called “bounce houses” and the inconsistent regulations covering them.

Chinese Drywall Lawsuit Settled in Florida

spacer image

A Chinese drywall supplier in Miami has agreed to a $54.5 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit over tainted homes in Florida. The drywall, imported after Hurricane Katrina and Rita, was found to "corrode pipes and electrical wiring, emit foul odors and allegedly caused headaches and breathing problems." The settlement will cover roughly 2,000 to 3,000 homes.  Toluse Olorunnipa, Miami Herald  06/15/2011

Utah, Salt Lake City Blamed for Boy's Drowning

spacer image

The family of an eight-year-old boy who drowned in 2009 has filed a lawsuit against the state of Utah and Salt Lake City, claiming the parties were negligent in failing to prevent the boy's death. The boy was walking across a Jordan River canal pipe when he fell into the water and drowned. The suit claims city and state had done nothing to keep people off the pipes and out of the area, even though they knew it to be potentially dangerous. The suit is seeking unspecified damages.  Benjamin Wood, The Deseret News  06/14/2011

Suit Filed Against Iowa Hospital over Injured Baby

spacer image

An Iowa family has filed a lawsuit against Mercy Medical Center and two local doctors for failing to notice the signs of abuse in their adopted son. The boy was brought into the hospital in July 2009 by his biological parents with "a bleeding brain and at least 15 old and new rib fractures" caused by abuse. Just three weeks earlier, the boy was in the same hospital with a broken arm, and the suit alleges doctors declined to look for any additional injuries or probe into the true cause of the injury. The brain bleed left the child severely brain damaged.  Jeff Eckhoff, DesMoines Register  06/15/2011

FDA Finds Filthy Conditions at Kellogg Plant

spacer image

Officials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found "potentially harmful bacteria and unsanitary conditions" at a Kellogg plant in Georgia, the Wall Street Journal reported. The conditions included pooling water and flies near surfaces that came into contact with food. The agency was not sure if the conditions would support the growth of the listeria bacteria, but officials did condemn the plant for its lack of cleaning and sanitation operations.  Katherine Hobson, WSJ Blogs  06/15/2011
