Texas Bar Blog: Disciplinary Notice Email Scam Targeting Attorneys
Texas Bar Blog: State Bars across the country are receiving reports of an email scam targeting attorneys using false notifications of disciplinary actions. So far attorneys in Alabama, California, Nevada, Georgia, and Florida have reported receiving emails that pose as a disciplinary notice from their state bar. In the emails, the lawyer is instructed to click on a link to view the complaint, which loads a malicious software called ransomware that blocks computer access until a sum of money is paid. Sweeping Overhaul of Nation's Chemical-Safety Laws Clears Final Legislative Hurdle

The Senate passed legislation Tuesday evening that will overhaul the way the federal government regulates every chemical sold on the market in the United States. The bipartisan accord represents the most sweeping environmental measure to pass Congress in a quarter-century. The bill, which drew support from the chemical industry, trial lawyers and many public health and environmental groups, updates a 40-year-old law long criticized as ineffective.

TurboTax Co. Says Terms Send Consumer Suit To Arbitration

Intuit Inc. told a New Jersey federal judge Monday that the claims lodged under a putative class action alleging the company's terms and conditions unlawfully asks its TurboTax customers to waive their rights to sue must be arbitrated individually outside of court.

Abbott Settles Depakote Suit As Jury Deliberates

Abbott Laboratories Inc. reached a settlement with a woman in Missouri alleging that the drugmaker's seizure and bipolar disorder drug Depakote caused a severe spinal condition in her son while the jury in the case was out deliberating Monday. The terms of the accord weren't immediately available Tuesday.

Blinded Woman Files Suit Against Exercise Band Maker

A New York woman has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer of an exercise band which caused her to go blind. The woman was blinded when the exercise band she was using snapped, causing a hard plastic ball to hit her in the eye. The lawsuit names the maker of the band, BRG Sports, formerly Easton-Bell Sports, as the defendant. The company is accused of negligence and defective design. The lawsuit alleges that there were "safer alternative designs" for the band that would have prevented the plaintiff's injury.

Amtrak Accused of Negligence in Railway Worker Deaths

Amtrak is facing a negligence lawsuit over a fatal collision near Philadephia which ended in the deaths of two railway workers. The lawsuit was filed in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court on behalf of the family of a 61-year-old victim who was killed in the April collision. The two rail workers were killed "when a train traveling 106 mph struck a backhoe on the same track." The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the exact cause of the incident.

Texas Contractor Removed from Bulldozer Death Lawsuit

The contract employer at Total Petrochemicals' refinery in Port Arthur, Texas has been dismissed from a wrongful death lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed by the family of a man who died when the bulldozer he was operating fell down an embankment. The 57-year-old man from Georgia died when he fell into near-boiling wastewater while he was operating the bulldozer. The man was performing work with the bulldozer which is usually performed by an overhead crane, which was out of service. The contractor was removed as a defendant in the lawsuit at the request of attorneys for the man's ex-wife and mother, who have also filed suit over the death.
