Lawsuit Says Church Abuse in Montana Spanned Decades

New claims of sexual and physical abuse by Roman Catholic clerics and nuns spanning decades in eastern Montana have been lodged in state court in Great Falls. The allegations were detailed in court documents filed Tuesday in a lawsuit pending since December against the Great Falls-Billings Diocese. They recount abuses against 11 youths at St. Paul’s Mission in Hays, the Cheyenne Home Orphanage, St. Labre Indian school and other diocese-owned sites. Another defendant — the Illinois-based Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis — was added to the case based on alleged abuse by a nun. The case is one of four sex-abuse lawsuits against the Catholic Church in Montana since last year and the second against the Great Falls-Billings Diocese.  MATTHEW BROWN, AP, Helena Independent Record  06/08/2012

spacer image

A Zavala County jury returned a verdict that legal experts estimate will probably be $162-million or more after a hearing is held to determine the final damages. The case before 365th District Cout basically centered on claims by a small privately-held oil company that a larger energy conglomerate stole leases from them in the Eagle Ford. Through initial production and assessments these leases are predicted to produce some $19-billion in revenues from oil and gas finds. Plaintiff in the case was Longview Energy Company and named defendants included The Huff Energy Fund, L.P., WRH Energy Partners, L.L.C., W.R. Huff Asset Management Com., LLC, William R. “Bill” Huff, Rick D’ Angelo, Ed Dartley, Bryan Bloom, Riley-Huff Energy Group, LLC and Bobby Riley. Longview Energy typically seeks investors for oil deals the company finds and puts together and through their operations attracted the attention of The Huff Energy Fund.  Staff, blog, Eagle Pass Leader  06/08/2012

Georgia Doctor Pays $3 Million in Malpractice Suit

A Georgia man's estate has been awarded $3 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit against a local cardiovascular doctor over the man's death. The 31-year-old died in 2009 from heart stress after having sex. Earlier that week, he had visited the doctor complaining of chest pains; the suit claims the doctor should have advised him to avoid "physical activity" until he had a stress test to determine the cause of the pain.  Staff Report, United Press International  05/31/2012

Suit: Firefighter Murdered His Wife, Family Alleges

A lawsuit has been filed against an Ottawa, Ill., firefighter accusing him of murdering his wife, who drowned in a toilet at the couple's home in 2006. After investigating the body last year, a coroner's jury ruled the woman's death a homicide. The civil lawsuit, filed by the woman's family, claims the couple was having marital problems, and that they were the only two people in their home the night of the woman's death.  Steve Schmadeke, Chicago Tribune  06/08/2012
