73,000 Kia Rio Vehicles Recalled in US

Kia Motors has issued a recall of more than 73,000 Kia Rio vehicles, model years 2006-2008, due to a problem with the passenger-side airbags. The company said due to a malfunction with the system, the passenger air bag can malfunction and deploy when a small child is seated in the front seat.  Christopher Jensen, The New York Times  06/05/2012

Connecticut Hospital Hit with Lawsuit

A Connecticut man has filed a lawsuit against a local hospital, saying staff members failed to promptly treat him for a painful erection in 2009, instead watching a baseball game on television while he waited. The man said he was in intense pain when he checked into an emergency room; upon arrival he was told to wait, and noticed a group of staff members, including his doctor, watching television. All in all, the plaintiff waited four hours and was transferred to another facility before being treated.  Wire Report, New York Daily News  06/05/2012

Boy Abused at Texas Summer Camp, Suit Says

A lawsuit has been filed against a central Texas summer camp after an 11-year-old male camper was sexually assaulted by a counselor in 2009. In the suit, the boy said he was forced to sleep in the same bed as the counselor, and was watched as he showered. The suit accuses the camp of negligence and failing to promptly investigate the claims.  Robert Stanton, Houston Chronicle  06/05/2012

Oregon Woman Settles for $900K After Contracting Herpes From Ex-Boyfriend

An Oregon woman will receive $900,000 from an ex-boyfriend to settle a lawsuit she filed after he gave her genital herpes. The jury ruled that the man "committed battery and made [the plaintiff] suffer greatly by exposing her to the STD." The woman claimed in her suit that she asked the man to wear a condom during sex, but after their encounter, he admitted he had not worn one and that he had herpes.  Erik Ortiz, New York Daily News  06/06/2012

LAX Hilton Pays $2.5 Million to Settle Employee Suit

The Hilton Hotel near LAX will pay $2.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by workers over withheld wages and improper overtime payments. The plaintiffs claimed in the suit that the hotel did not pay them for time preparing for their day and donning or removing their uniforms, which they were required to leave at the hotel. The suit also accused the hotel of not providing proper meal and rest breaks for employees.  Dan Weikel, LA Times  06/05/2012

University Settles Racial Discrimination Suit

Washington State University will settle a $650,000 lawsuit filed by two former employees accusing the school of racial discrimination. The plaintiffs, a husband and wife of Chinese descent, claim they were subjected to "overt discrimination" by the supervisor in their research lab.  Wire Report, Seattle Post-Intelligencer  06/05/2012
