Solitary Confinement Targeted in Prison Lawsuit

A constitutional rights group has filed a lawsuit that aims to end the excessive use of solitary confinement on behalf of inmates at Pelican Bay State Prison. The inmates, some of which have been in solitary confinement for more than 10 years, claim in the suit the confinement is basically torture that has been "condemned by the international community."  Chris Megerian, LA Times  05/31/2012

Suit: Coach Fired Because He is Gay

A former water polo coach at a charter high school in Southern California has filed a lawsuit against the school, claiming he was fired because he is homosexual. The suit claims the plaintiff was fired over photos of him on his Facebook and MySpace pages, which the school claimed were obscene. The suit accuses the school of "animus toward gay and lesbian employees" and is requesting damages plus reinstatement of his job.  Corina Knoll, LA Times  06/03/2012

Family Receives $6.41 Million in Malpractice Suit

A Philadelphia jury has awarded $6.41 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit against Temple University Hospital over a misdiagnosis that resulted in a man's death. The lawsuit claims doctors misdiagnosed a 38-year-old man's heart condition, believing it to be pneumonia. Suit Settled over Girl's Death at LA Rave

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and a local event organizer will pay $190,000 to settle a wrongful death lawsuit after a 15-year-old girl died from an ecstasy overdose at then 2010 Electric Daisy Carnival. After the girl's death, her family filed suit, accusing the defendants of "personal injury and wrongful death."  Wire Report, The Sacramento Bee  06/02/2012
