Report Shows NFL's Mel Farr Had Stage 3 CTE Prior to Death

A report has found that former Detroit Lions running back Mel Farr had Stage 3 chronic chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) prior to his death. Following the player's death, medical examiners found that he did have CTE, which can cause aggression, depression, memory loss and sometimes even dementia. Prior to his death, the former player had joined a class-action lawsuit over the alleged health issue which included his brother Miller Farr, cousin Jerry LeVias and sons Mel Farr Jr. and Mike Farr as plaintiffs. All of the men had played in the NFL.

Flint Residents File $700M Lawsuit Over Water Crisis

A lawsuit has been filed by residents of Flint, Michigan seeking over $700 million in connection with the city's water crisis. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of about 1,700 residents of the city, which has been without safe drinking water since 2014. Allegations among the lawsuits are "failure to take mandatory actions required by the Safe Drinking Water Act, failing to undertake a timely investigation and failing to warn the public of environmental risks to public health." The lawsuit alleges that the plaintiffs have suffered physical injury, illness, lead poisoning, dermatological disorders, loss of hair, and gastrointestinal disorders as a result of the city's water.

Double Surgery Did Not Cause Manâ??s Quadriplegia, Jury Finds
spacer image
A Boston jury on Monday found that a spine surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital failed to inform a Westwood financial analyst that he planned to operate on two patients at once, but the jury concluded that the doctorâ??s divided attention did not cause the manâ??s quadriplegia. As a result the jury awarded Tony Meng, a 45-year-old father of two, no financial damages. Meng testified in Suffolk Superior Court that Dr. Kirkham Wood never told him that he planned to juggle Mengâ??s 2012 surgery with that of another spine patient for more than five hours. Meng said he never would have consented to the operation had he known.

Copy Fees Limit Patient Access to Medical Records, Doctors Argue
spacer image
Even though U.S. patients are supposed to have easy access to electronic copies of their medical records, copy fees can prevent people from getting this information when they need it, some doctors argue. Under federal guidelines issued last year, health providers are permitted to charge fees for labor, costs of creating electronic or paper copies of records and postage, Dr. Harlan Krumholz of Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, and colleagues write in JAMA Internal Medicine. Even though these guidelines suggest a maximum flat fee of $6.50 for electronic copies of digital records, most state laws and healthcare providers still set per-page copy fees that can add up to much higher costs for patients, the doctors note in their â??Viewpointâ?? article.

HP has added an additional 101,000 laptop batteries to a recall due to a fire hazard. The laptop batteries â??can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards,â?? says an official statement. The company recalled 41,000 last June, but the additional batteries were recently added to the list. The recall includes HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP Envy, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion notebooks which were shipped to US, Canada, and Mexico between March 2013 and October 2016.
