Harris County Road Fatalities Rise, Bucking Large County Trend

spacer image

Based on data collected from the Texas Department of Transportation by the San Antonio Express-News, Harris County unsurprisingly topped the list of counties in roadway fatalities. Harris County was the only one of the 10 largest counties where the total went up. All of the others saw declines in the number of roadway deaths or stayed the same.

DuPont Workers Had Been Exposed to Potentially Lethal Chemicals for Years, Records Show

DuPont reported regular malfunctions with a multimillion-dollar exhaust and ventilation system inside its La Porte pesticide plant that exposed workers to potentially dangerous fumes for years before a catastrophic release killed four there on Nov. 15, public records obtained by the Houston Chronicle reveal. But it appears that no one ever alerted officials with the Occupational Health and Safety Administration about smaller but still significant levels of the toxic gas that DuPont reported releasing during troubleshooting activities for the last six years, according to reports filed with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Among the conclusions of a report published in the Journal of Microscopy and Ultrastructure entitled “Why children absorb more microwave radiation than adults: The consequences” from an analysis of peer-reviewed studies, the authors argue that children and adolescents are at considerable risk from devices that radiate microwaves (and that adults are at a lower, but still significant, risk).

U.S. Supreme Court Rules for Homeowners in Mortgage Dispute

spacer image

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled in favor of homeowners seeking to back out of mortgages when lenders are accused of failing to follow a federal "truth in lending" law. On a 9-0 vote, the court handed a win to an Eagan, Minnesota couple, Larry and Cheryle Jesinoski, over the $611,000 loan they obtained in 2007 from Countrywide Home Loans Inc, now part of Bank of America Corp. On the technical question before the justices, the court said homeowners need only write a letter to the lender, as the Jesinoskis did, and do not need to file a lawsuit in order to benefit from a provision of a federal law known as the Truth in Lending Act.

Family Sues City of Forney and Police Chief

spacer image

A Kaufman County resident has filed a civil lawsuit against the City of Forney and its police chief, alleging negligence and false imprisonment after officers mistakenly pulled her and three children over in August. The lawsuit, filed Monday, says police violated the Fourth Amendment rights of Kametra Barbour and three children during a traffic stop on August 9. That night, officers searching for four black men in a tan car stopped Barbour’s burgundy sedan and briefly held her and her 6-year-old son at gunpoint. Her 9-year-old daughter and two 10-year-old goddaughters were inside the car at the time of the traffic stop.

Newtown Families File Wrongful Death Lawsuit

spacer image

The families of two victims in the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the town and the Board of Education. The lawsuit alleges that the school's security measures were inadequate and that while the school practiced lockdown and evacuation procedures, they were not implemented on the day of the shooting. The lawsuit further alleges that a substitute teacher was not informed about lockdown procedures or given a key to lock her classroom. The substitute and 20 of her students were killed by the 20-year-old shooter before he killed himself.
