Appeals Court Upholds $20M Verdict in Home Explosion Lawsuit | | A California appeals court has upheld a $20 million verdict in a lawsuit filed by a San Gabriel resident whose home exploded. The plaintiff in the lawsuit was severely burned in a natural gas explosion at his home nearly five years ago. According to the attorney for the plaintiff, the jury awarded the plaintiff a total of $19,876,818 and found that the defendant, Southern California Gas Co., was liable for about $18.1 million of that amount. The Gas Co. admitted liability in the incident before the trial was to take place. Staff Report, Pasadena Star-News 01/08/2016 | Read Article: Pasadena Star-News | GM Goes to Trial Over Faulty Ignition Switches | | General Motors is headed to trial today in a lawsuit over faulty ignition switches that were recalled in 2014. The recall involved millions of vehicles that contained the faulty switches, which led to about 400 injuries and deaths. The lawsuit was filed by a man who "claims he was injured when his 2003 Saturn Ion ran off the highway, became airborne and then struck the ground and trees in May 2014." The auto maker has already agreed to pay around $2 billion in civil and criminal penalties and settlements regarding the switch litigation. Jessica Dye, Reuters 01/11/2016 | Read Article: Reuters | Lawsuit Challenges Unpaid Life Flight Lunch Breaks | | Life Flight crews should be paid for their 30-minute lunch breaks because they can't leave the helipad and must be ready to rush to motor vehicle crashes, air accidents and other life-threatening emergencies at all times, a former Life Flight paramedic says in a Houston federal court lawsuit. David Brandt is seeking class action status on behalf of about 50 former co-workers who work 12-hour shifts for Life Flight, the storied helicopter ambulance service that has become famous for its speedy rescues. The nurses, paramedics and pilots must clock out manually each day for their 30-minute break, but the time isn't really their own, the lawsuit alleges. L.M. The filing quotes users who complained online. In December, the suit says, Weight Watcher brass apologized publicly and promised repairs.
