J&J's Talcum Powder Goes on Trial in Ovarian Cancer Lawsuits
spacer image
Johnson & Johnson faces accusations by the family of a woman who died that it knew decades ago that talc, the Earth's softest mineral, was linked to ovarian cancer. The verdict may set the tone for whether J&J fights or tries to settle 1,200 lawsuits over products such as baby powder. J&J's internal documents will show it knew of studies connecting talc use and ovarian cancer but continued to market it, particularly to African-American and Hispanic women, the plaintiff's attorney told jurors at the start of trial Tuesday in state court in St. Louis.

Jurors from La Salle County Circuit Court in Texas deliberated for less than two hours on Monday in a wrongful death case that has resulted in a $1.6 million award. The lawsuit was filed over the death of a man who was struck by another man in front of the Two Fools Bar in La Salle, causing him to fall and hit his head. He died from his injuries the next day. The 31-year-old man who struck the victim pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and spent nine months in prison.
