Suit: Officer Beat Man, Bosses Looked the Other Way

A former Mississippi state trooper has been accused in a lawsuit of savagely beating a man who drove around a roadblock last year, and his supervisors are accused of ignoring it. The lawsuit claims that after the beating, the officer told a co-worker to destroy the surveillance video and filed charges "to hold over [the plaintiff] to avert legal repercussions." The officer has a history of violence and is currently on trial for beating another person in a local county jail.

Johnny Manziel Files Trademark Lawsuit

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel has filed a lawsuit against the maker of the "Keep Calm and Johnny Football" t-shirts, claiming trademark infringement. The Manziel family trademarked the nickname "Johnny Football" last fall, and is asking the court for injunctive relief and damages.

Johns Hopkins Doctor Accused of Recording Patients

Two former patients have filed suit against a Johns Hopkins gynecologist, alleging he may have taken secret recordings of them during exams. The lawsuit claims negligence, invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress by the doctor, as well as claims against Johns Hopkins. Local police are investigating the claims.

Fracking liability Suits Will be Followed by Insurance Coverage Disputes

Insurance coverage disputes are bound to follow fracking liability suits, including arguments over the scope of pollution exclusions in general liability policies, lawyers say. Along with operators extra expense policies, which cover cleanup costs from a well blowout, general liability policies also cover “sudden and accidental” pollution if discharges are discovered and reported within certain time limits — for example, discovery within 30 days and reporting to underwriters within 90 days.

Suit Filed over Fatal Accident in Oakdale, Calif.

The death of an off-duty police officer in Oakdale, Calif., in a car accident has prompted a lawsuit by the man's widow against the driver of the truck that crashed into him. The officer's vehicle had been stopped by a Caltrans worker in a construction zone when his car was rammed by a tractor-trailer. The lawsuit alleges the driver of the truck was reckless and negligent due to driving while distracted or fatigued.

Fatal Calif. Bus Crash Prompts Lawsuit

A lawsuit has been filed against two bus companies that owned a tour bus involved in a fatal crash on Super Bowl Sunday near Yucaipa, Calif. The bus driver claims the bus brakes failed on Highway 38 coming down from the San Bernardino Mountains. The bus crossed the center line of the highway, rolled over and collided with two vehicles; seven passengers were killed. The suit, filed on behalf of two of the survivors, is seeking unspecified damages.
