Investigation: Sick, Dying and Raped in America's Nursing Homes
spacer image
In cases reviewed by CNN, victims and their families were failed at every stage. Nursing homes were slow to investigate and report allegations because of a reluctance to believe the accusations -- or a desire to hide them. Police viewed the claims as unlikely at the outset, dismissing potential victims because of failing memories or jumbled allegations. And because of the high bar set for substantiating abuse, state regulators failed to flag patterns of repeated allegations against a single caregiver. It's these systemic failures that make it especially hard for victims to get justice -- and even easier for perpetrators to get away with their crimes. http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2017/02/health/nursing-home-sex-abuse-investigation/

Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over Fires, Leaks Linked to Calif. Refinery
spacer image
A class action lawsuit filed in California alleges that fires, leaks, and other public safety issues are due to the actions of the individuals who run an ExxonMobil refinery in Torrance. The lawsuit was filed by three residents of South Bay who allege that a "corporate choice to place profits over public safety" has led to the issues. The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday, the day before another fire erupted. The plaintiffs were prompted to file the lawsuit after an explosion occurred at the refinery in Feb. 2015.

State Canâ??t Help With Most Unpaid Insurance Claims
spacer image
The Texas Department of Insurance claims it can help resolve complaints against insurance companies and boasts of helping Texas consumers get millions of dollars in unpaid claims every year. However, a KXAN Investigation finds that only happens in certain situations and most of the time the state has no power to do anything at all, leaving youâ??the consumerâ??without much recourse.
