The Big Moral Dilemma Facing Self-Driving Cars
spacer image
How many people could self-driving cars kill before we would no longer tolerate them? This once-hypothetical question is now taking on greater urgency, particularly among policymakers in Washington. The promise of autonomous vehicles is that they will make our roads safer and more efficient, but no technology is without its shortcomings and unintended consequences.

Witness: North TX Hospitals Engaged in Bidding War to Lure Surgeons With Kickbacks
spacer image
Court documents in an illegal healthcare kickback case describe a corrupt system in which North Texas hospitals competed with each other for patients by handing out money, and surgeons brought their patients to the highest bidder. The allegations were described in a plea agreement for one of the alleged ringleaders in the Forest Park Medical Center kickback case. Dr. Richard Toussaint agreed on Thursday to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to pay and receive health care bribes and kickbacks and one count of commercial bribery. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for the two counts. A judge will have to approve the deal before it becomes official. He had been facing 20 counts.

Transcript: Popular Remington 700 Rifle Linked to Potentially Deadly Defect
A federal judge in Missouri heard arguments this past week in a case involving one of the most popular bolt-action rifles in American history: the Remington 700 series. Hereâ??s the problem: thousands of owners have complained these rifles have fired without anyone squeezing the trigger. The company has downplayed the danger for decades and the complaints represent only a fraction of the rifles out there. But 10 attorneys general wrote the court saying, â??There are potentially as many as 7.5 million defective rifles at issue.â?? And that, â??Remington knows or should knowâ?Œthey are unreasonably dangerous.â??

Ship Workers Required to Use 'Widow Maker' Tool, Says Lawsuit
spacer image
A lawsuit has been filed alleging that the Austal ship manufacturing plant in Mobile, Alabama, forced its employees to use a dangerous cutting tool. According to the lawsuit, after a large number of injuries occurred, management began to refer to the device as the "widow maker." The lawsuit states that the tool led to injuries to 53 workers, including gashes to face, neck and arms and lost fingers. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit, current and former employees of Austal, say that they were required to use the tool even after they raised concerns to health and safety officials at the company in March 2011.
