The company was facing a number of lawsuits alleging that DuPont's leaking of perfluorooctanoic acid, a chemical used to make Teflon, at its plant in Parkersburg, West Virginia, had caused six diseases. DuPont was facing about 3,550 personal injury claims over the chemical leak. The lawsuit was filed against the North Clackamas School District over the incident in which the Milwaukie High School cheerleader suffered a brain injury when she fell during a stunt, was not caught by her fellow cheerleaders, and hit her head on a floor mat. As alleged in the lawsuit, "the district failed to appoint a properly trained coach, failed to adequately train team members in following safety rules for the sport and failed to assign spotters." All three men died when the athlete's boat crashed in September and the parents of the other two men have filed suit. The lawsuits, filed against Fernandez's estate, are each seeking about $2 million in damages. The first lawsuit was filed on Friday and the second is to become official on Monday.
