Report: Trucking Industry Avoids Mandatory Safety Devices | | The trucking industry, which lobbies Congress heavily on a wide-swath of transportation issues, is not required to have certain safety devices despite a decades-old push to make them mandatory, according to a new report on NBCâ??s Today Show. The Department of Transportation (DOT) has been weighing whether to require â??side guardsâ?? on all trucks since the 1960s. The devices can help prevent nine out of 10 injuries from under-ride collisions, in which a car hits the side of a tractor-trailer and crashes underneath it. Jury Finds for Couple in LBJ Express Damage Lawsuit, Awarded $248K | | A family has won its case claiming the LBJ freeway expansion damaged their home. Aurora and Felipe Rodriguez were the first of 223 plaintiffs to go to trial against Trinity Infrastructure, claiming the construction caused the homes to shift and crack. MetLife Owes Employees $50M in Overtime, Says Class Action Suit | | A resident of Charleston, South Carolina has filed a class action lawsuit against MetLife alleging that employees were not paid overtime. According to the complaint, MetLife owes its employees over $50 million in overtime pay for the last three years. The lawsuit was filed in Hartford, Connecticut, on Tuesday by a former claims specialist for MetLife who worked at the company in Bloomfield, Connecticut, from September 2013 until last July. The lawsuit alleges that the plaintiff's employment status was altered as "a cost-cutting measure" so that MetLife could avoid state and federal overtime laws. Lawsuit Says "Suction Entrapment" Caused Boy's Drowning Death | | A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed over an incident wherein a 7-year-old California boy died after being pulled unconscious by a backyard spa. The lawsuit was filed by the parents of the child who drowned in November when he was held underwater by the spa pump. The complaint, filed against the landlord of the home, as well as a real estate company and the manufacturers of the spaâ??s pump alleges that â??suction entrapmentâ?? was the cause of the child's death. The boy's parents filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday. Also named as plaintiffs are the child's brother and sister and two other family members.
