Fracking Research Hits Roadblock with Texas Law
spacer image
The Texas law allows companies to withhold specific chemicals by labeling them as proprietary. Operators in Texas have invoked the exemption to shield â?? at least partially - the identities of more than 170,000 ingredients from when the law took effect in February 2012 through April, an analysis of the disclosure records shows. A provision in Texas law requires the disclosure of chemicals listed as trade secrets to emergency personnel, but not to toxicologists or academics. That has left researchers with FracFocus, the Internet clearinghouse used by Texas and at least 20 other states for public disclosure of ingredients in fracking fluid.

The wrongful death and injury lawsuit alleges that the Department of Transportation issued passing grades on safety tests to the bus for years despite serious safety issues. The bus crash resulted in the deaths of seven bus passengers and injuries to about two dozen others. The lawsuit was filed Dec. 21 in U.S. District Court Southern District of California in San Diego.

Sandra Bland's mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, has added 10 Waller County officials in a federal lawsuit over her daughter's 2015 death in the Waller County Jail. She also alleges two screening officers at the Waller County Jail â?? along with 10 other jail officials including the sheriff â?? neglected Bland after her booking, failing to check on her or seek medical attention once she was found in her cell. Bland's mother also says the county is responsible for placing her in a cell alone and where a "large garbage can, garbage bags, exposed beams, cords and other items," were available to her daughter, after she had said she was once suicidal.
