Wear: Relatives Show Toll of Drivers Texting as Legislature Again Weighs Ban

About 10 percent of fatal crashes nationwide in 2013 were caused by distracted driving, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates, with phone use being that distraction most of the time. The total loss of life on Texas streets and highways last year reached 3,700, Houston Senior Police Officer Don Egdorf said. As for how many of those might have been related to phones, Egdorf said even police canâ??t say for sure. Survivors often decline to admit to the role of their cellphones in collisions, he said. And often there is no one left to offer such testimony. The practice, he said, is â??underreported.â?? â??This is something that has to stop,â?? Egdorf said. â??These are not accidents. Itâ??s an intentional act.â??

Insurers, Plaintiff's Lawyers Square off in Austin Over Hail Storm Bill

Lobbyists representing insurance companies are pushing legislation they say will prevent premium increases by weeding out "abusive" lawsuits over damages caused by hail and other storms in what is shaping up as a battle royal with consumers and plaintiffs' lawyers. The looming clash pits insurance industry lobbyists and their allies from Texans for Lawsuit Reform against the Texas Trial Lawyers Association and Texas Watch, a nonprofit consumer group, which contend the industry's bill is designed to boost profits and restrict consumer access to the courts.

The University of Pennsylvania and Amazon have settled a lawsuit filed by the family of a nursing student who committed suicide by ingesting illegal cyanide products. The student purchased the products through Amazon.com and committed suicide in her Rodin College House dorm room in February 2013. Her family filed suit after her death alleging that the university acted â??unsympathetic, hostile and at times vindictiveâ?? after the girl reported a 2011 sexual assault. Philadelphia Judge Matthew D. Carrafiello recently passed a joint motion to settle the lawsuit under confidential terms.
