Court Finds that Reynolds Owes $2.12M to Widow in Smoking Lawsuit |
A Florida District Court jury has determined that R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. owes $2.12 million to a widow in the latest Engle progeny cases to reach a verdict. The jury ruled Feb. 11 that Reynolds and Charles Sowers were responsible equally for the illness that contributed to his death. The jury did not list punitive damages against Reynolds. Engle cases have been scrutinized since they sprang from a decision in 2006 by the Florida Supreme Court that decertified a $145 billion class-action lawsuit initially filed by Howard Engle. That ruling allowed former class members to file individual lawsuits stating that cigarettes caused their respective illnesses. Richard Craver, Winston-Salem Journal 02/18/2015 |

Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Over Contaminated Caramel Apples |
A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the family of a woman who died after contracting listeriosis from a contaminated caramel apple. The California woman's husband and sons filed the lawsuit against Safeway, the grocery store which sold the apple. The woman ate the listeria-contaminated caramel apple around Halloween of last year and died weeks later. Records show that 35 people in 12 states were infected with a genetically identical strain of Listeria monocytogenes. The apples were recalled in December of last year.
