NLRB Judge Nixes Mortgage Lender's Arbitration Rules

Mortgage lender PennyMac must revise its arbitration policy, a National Labor Relations Board judge ruled Tuesday, finding it illegally forced workers to waive their right to collectively pursue any employment-related claims. PennyMac, which operates Private National Mortgage Acceptance Co. LLC, was ordered to revise its mandatory arbitration policy by Administrative Law Judge Raymond P. Green, who found that it contained class waiver provisions that violated the National Labor Relations Act.

Texas Mortgage Companies, Founder Must Pay $93 Million in Fraud Case: Jury

Americus Mortgage Corp, AllQuest Home Mortgage Corp, and their founder, Jim Hodge, were found liable on Tuesday by a Houston federal jury for violating the False Claims Act and the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act. The jury awarded nearly $93 million in damages, including $7.37 million against Hodge, a sum that is subject to mandatory tripling.

EPA to Consider Banning Asbestos, Other Chemicals

FDA: Smoking Exposure Kills Dogs, Cats

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), secondhand smoke is also harmful to household pets like dogs, cats, birds, fish, and guinea pigs who are exposed to it. The FDA has long warned that secondhand smoke can travel through the air and harm nearby people who breathe in the fumes. The agency is also concerned about thirdhand smoke, which leaves a residue that stains clothes, furniture, and carpets.

Lawsuit Accuses Guardrail Maker in Fatal Car Crash

A lawsuit has been filed by the mother of a man who died in a car crash in New York in April 2015, blaming his death on faulty guardrails. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Peoria and accuses Trinity Industries of making the faulty railing that allegedly caused the death of the plaintiff's son. Two passengers who survived the crash are listed as co-plaintiffs in the lawsuit. The complaint alleges negligence, liability and negligent and intentional infliction of emotional distress, among other claims. The plaintiffs are seeking $75,000 for each of the 21 claims in addition to an unspecified amount of punitive damages.

Texas Instruments Exposed Employees to Dangerous Chemicals, Says Lawsuit

A number of former employees at a Texas Instruments Inc. plant in Attleboro, Massachusetts have filed a lawsuit over toxic chemicals at the plant. The plaintiffs allege that the Dallas company failed to protect them from the chemicals, which have caused death and serious illnesses. According to the complaint, many of the company's employees have been stricken with cancers and other serious ailments from exposure to dangerous materials such as uranium. Included in the list of plaintiffs are the estates of a number of former employees who have since died. The lawsuit alleges that Texas Instruments "had lax safety standards, recklessly disposed of radioactive and toxic waste, and hid the danger from its employees." The plaintiffs are seeking tens of millions of dollars in compensation.
