Trial Date Set in Wrongful Death Suit in Bland Case

A trial date for the Sandra Bland civil wrongful death lawsuit was set for January 2017 during a status hearing on Thursday. Geneva Reed-Veal, Bland's mother, and the estate in August filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against DPS, Encinia, Waller County and county jail staffers Elsa Magnus and Oscar Prudente. The state and the trooper have claimed immunity against the lawsuit's allegations and filed motions asking for the case to be thrown out.

NV Court Rules Psychiatrist Can't be Sued Over Expert Testimony

The Nevada Supreme Court has ruled that a psychiatrist is protected from being sued over his expert testimony at a trial. The court said the testimony is to help the judge or jury reach a decision. The court's ruling, written by Justice Michael Douglas, said protecting psychiatrists from being sued helps get to the truth.
