Uber Faces Lawsuit in California, Lyft Settles

spacer image

A lawsuit has been filed against ride-sharing service Uber by district attorneys from Los Angeles and San Francisco alleging that the company "misleads consumers about the service's safety, overcharges them and thumbs its nose at the law." At the same time, prosecutors have settled a lawsuit against Lyft, a similar taxi-like service, with the company agreeing to "play by the rules." The lawsuit against Uber alleges that the company misleads its customers about how they are protected and that the company has violated California law. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, seeks an injunction to stop the company from "violating California law," as well as civil penalties and restitution for riders who suffered economic harm.

Texas energy regulators are facing a federal whistleblower complaint from a former state inspector who claims he was fired because he complained about the lax enforcement of rules meant to protect the environment. The complaint against the Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates oil and gas drilling, was filed last year by Frederick Wright. Wright, who served as an engineering specialist with the state agency, “complained repeatedly about the pressure he felt he was under to make exceptions” to state rules designed to protect the water supply from pollution related to oil and gas exploration before he was fired in June 2013, Wright’s lawyer wrote last year to the Whistleblower Protection Program at the U.S. Department of Labor.
