Jefferson Parish Jury Awards $24M in Med Mal Case

spacer image

A Jefferson Parish jury has awarded a Webster Parish woman $24.2 million in damages in a medical malpractice lawsuit. Jurors sided with the woman in finding that her toddler was left with irreversible brain damage after an infusion pump malfunctioned during his surgery at Ochsner Clinic Foundation seven years ago. Tyronglia Willis, of Springhill, sued Ochsner and the pump manufacturers in 24th Judicial District Court in Gretna on behalf of her son, Ty'Kevion Kidd, who was 3 when he underwent surgery in March 2005 at the Jefferson Highway hospital to correct a congenital heart defect.  Paul Purpura, New Orleans Times-Picayune  08/14/2012

Abusers of Social Media May Face Felony in Texas

The Wild World Web can be an ugly place, its commentators and trolls emboldened by anonymity, and inevitably some cross the line into the ridiculous, the sinister and even the threatening. Whatever their reasons, lawbreakers could be in for a jolt now that prosecutors are pursuing cases under a 2011 Texas law that makes such behavior subject to serious prison time. A review by the Star-Telegram shows that few district attorneys have used the law. The cases that have gone forward typically stem from nasty personal feuds that target women.  Darren Barbee, Star Telegram  08/14/2012

Student Suit Against Idaho College Tossed by Judge

An Idaho judge has dismissed a lawsuit against the University of Idaho filed by a student who fell off a local fraternity house in 2009. The girl fell out a window during a Sigma Alpha Epsilon party, suffering "debilitating injuries." The judge, however, ruled that the university cannot be held responsible for what students do on private property and "shouldn't be held liable for accidents."  Wire Report, The Sacramento Bee  08/14/2012
