Decision: Justices Remain on Florida Ballot

A circuit judge in Florida has dismissed a lawsuit seeking to remove three Supreme Court justices from an upcoming ballot. A conservative legal group and voters from two counties claimed “the justices should be disqualified for using court-appointed staff to help them complete their qualifying papers.” However, an investigation revealed this practice is quite common across the state and the judge ruled the argument was without merit.  Mary Ellen Klas, Miami Herald  08/08/2012

Church Faces Suit Over Sexual Abuse by Former Employee

The parents of an alleged sexual abuse victim have filed a lawsuit for unspecified damages against a Baptist church in Georgia for negligence. The parents claim the church, which allowed a man accused of explicit and suggestive messages and remarks to work as a volunteer, failed to take action to protect children from sexual exploitation and failed to report abuse to law enforcement.  Alexis Stevens , Atlanta Journal-Constitution  08/09/2012

Texas' Traffic Fatality Rate Dips, Still Above National Average

Traffic fatalities in Texas, reflecting a nationwide trend, have decreased almost 15 percent since 2006, according to a state audit of the Texas Department of Transportation released Wednesday.The state audit includes a state-by-state comparison, using 2009 figures. Texas that year was the 16th most dangerous state for drivers. In explaining Texas' comparatively higher vehicle fatality rate, TxDOT officials pointed to stricter laws in other states related to distracted driving.  Ben Wear, Austin American Statesman  08/09/2012

Infosys Faces Second Whistleblower Lawsuit

A former Infoys employee has filed suit against the massive Indian outsourcing company claiming he was harassed after reporting illegal activity regarding work visas, taxes and billing. Another whistleblower suit over Infosys visa fraud is set to go to trial later this month, and the company has reportedly initiated an internal investigation of the claims.  Aradhana Aravindan, Reuters  08/09/2012
