Most Railroads Won't Meet Deadline for Safety Controls, Report Says

The majority of freight railroads and passenger trains will not be able to meet a year-end deadline to install technology that prevents trains from exceeding speed limits and helps avoid collisions, the Federal Railroad Administration said Friday in a report to Congress. Congress set a deadline of Dec. 31 for freight and commuter rail companies to install the technology, which is known as positive train control, after a California passenger train derailed in 2008, killing 25 people. But the report, which was provided to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees, said few railroads were on schedule to meet the deadline.

Judge Dismisses Lawsuit by Black Nurse Barred from Caring for White Patient

A lawsuit filed by a black nurse who was not allowed to care for a white patient has been dismissed by a judge. The lawsuit was filed by the nurse against Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital and alleged that the hospital intentionally discriminated against black employees. The lawsuit further alleged that the plaintiff lost a promotion because of her race. The lawsuit was dismissed because U.S. District Judge Janet Neff said the plaintiff could not prove she suffered an adverse employment action because of her race. The plaintiff was employed at the hospital from February 2001 until May 2013, when she left for a job in Arizona.
