Judge Decides Against Sanctions for USAA Lawyers

An Arkansas federal judge has decided not to impose sanctions on lawyers for San Antonio-based USAA who he said 'abused the judicial process' in settlement negotiations of a class-action lawsuit. U.S. District Judge P.K. Holmes III in Fort Smith, Arkansas, ruled that the three lawyers for USAA and seven attorneys for USAA policyholders who had sued the company had not acted in bad faith when they violated a court rule. The judge, however, imposed sanctions on five other lawyers for the USAA policyholders after concluding the attorneys had acted in bad faith.

The parents of a California woman who died at a rave have filed a lawsuit over her drug-related death. The 19-year-old woman died of an ecstasy overdose while at an event at the Los Angeles County fairgrounds last August. Her parents allege in the lawsuit that the event organizers should have known that the Hard Summer event would promote "widespread illegal and illicit activity" and drug use. The lawsuit names as defendants the event organizer, Live Nation, and the venue operator, the Los Angeles County Fair Assn.

A Texas hospital is facing a wrongful death lawsuit over the death of an infant in 2014. The Port Arthur hospital was named in the lawsuit over the death of the infant after a botched delivery. According to the lawsuit, doctors using forceps to deliver the baby caused a skull fracture and brain hemorrhaging which later caused the infant's death. The wrongful death lawsuit alleges that doctors should not have used forceps, a method that is being phased out by most medical professionals, to deliver the child. The lawsuit seeks $1 million and was filed by the baby's parents in Jefferson County civil court.
