The family's product liability lawsuit filed Tuesday in Harris County focuses on airbag maker Takata's use of explosive ammonium nitrate in its airbags and the failure by others to protect Huma Hanif, 17. The teen was the second person in the Houston area and the 10th person in the US to be killed by an airbag in a car crash. The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit was filed in federal court on Wednesday and alleges that the VA has blocked a search for answers for thousands of veterans who were sickened by contaminated water at Camp Lejuene. The lawsuit seeks to force the VA to respond to a 2015 request for information about the contaminated water which caused illness between 1953 and 1987. The lawsuit, filed by the man who was injured in the crash, alleges that the other driver was using the "speed filter" on Snapchat at the time of the collision. The filter posts the user's speed and the other driver admitted that she was trying to get her Mercedes Benz up to 100 mph while taking a picture of herself. Authorities reported that the girl was traveling at about 107 mph when she hit the plaintiff's car. The attorney for the plaintiff stated the lawsuit is "about Snapchat encouraging teenagers to drive at fast speed for social status." The suspension flaw, which affects certain 2014-15 Ford Explorer and Ford Police Interceptor SUVs, has been linked to one crash and one injury, according to the recall. In addition, the transmission flaw, which causes the vehicles to shift to first gear at the wrong time, has been linked to three crashes.
