Jury Sides With Petco in Death of Boy From Rat-Bite Fever

A San Diego jury has sided with Petco in a lawsuit brought by the family of a 10-year-old boy who died after contracting an illness from bacteria from a rat purchased from the retailer. KNSD-TV and KFMB-TV report that the jury found Thursday that Petco was not negligent or liable in the death of Aidan Pankey on June 12, 2013, after he was rushed to a hospital with severe stomach pains. The jury found that Petco did enough to warn the boy's family of the possible risks and dangers of owning a pet rat, and therefore was not negligent in the boy's death.

High Court Reins In Judges On Misconduct Sanctions
A unanimous U.S. Supreme Court decision Tuesday setting boundaries on litigation sanctions will discourage judges from handing down penalties that go beyond making victims whole to more severely punish attorneys and their clients who engage in discovery shenanigans or other misconduct, experts say. The decision â?? which upended a $2.7 million fine against Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for withholding a key test in a vehicle crash case and remanded the case for further review â?? also puts a heavier burden on those seeking such penalties.

Widow Awarded $3M in Lawsuit Against Pharmaceutical Company
spacer image
A widow has been awarded $3 million in her lawsuit against a pharmaceutical company over her husband's suicide. The woman's husband was killed when he stepped in front of a Chicago train in July 2010. The lawsuit filed against GlaxoSmithKline alleged that the company failed to warn her husband's doctor of the drug's increased risk of suicidal behavior. Although the plaintiff's husband was taking the generic version of the medication, the lawsuit alleges that the GlaxoSmithKline is still liable because the medications and packaging are identical.
