Hotel Sparks Lawsuit | | A lawsuit has been filed over an outbreak of Legionnaires disease at a hotel in Millbrook, Alabama. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of two families from Jefferson County who allege they contracted the disease during their stay at the Sleep Inn & Suites. One couple and several members of a girls' softball team tested positive for the disease after their stay at the hotel. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama and names as defendant Choice Hotels International, Inc., which does business as Sleep Inn & Suites. City Settles Lawsuit Over $50 Bill | | The city of East Lansing, Michigan has settled a lawsuit filed by a man who was arrested for using a legitimate $50 bill that local bar staff believed to be counterfeit. The plaintiff was arrested for disorderly conduct and fined $50 after police arrived at the scene and saw him arguing with bar staff over the bill. According to the lawsuit, the bill was too old to have the security features of new bills and the bar staff believed it to be counterfeit. According to East Lansing City Council records, the lawsuit was settled for a total of $15,500. The plaintiff alleges that her attacker, who is now serving a three-year sentence in prison, raped her in her home during a parole visit. The lawsuit contends that the Parma Municipal Court Administrator should not have hired the parole officer due to his "shady past." The lawsuit seeks $25,000 each from the court administrator and the parole officer, in addition to an unspecified amount of money for punitive damages and lawyers fees. James F. In May 2013, Michael and Myra Cerny sued Marathon Oil Corp., Marathon Oil EF LLC and Plains Exploration & Producing Co. The ruling throws into limbo two other Karnes County cases. Shelby and Lynn Buehring and Thomas and Cynthia Dupnik also have sued Marathon and its Eagle Ford subsidiary this year with similar health complaints. Settles Lawsuit Over Boy's Death | | Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. has settled a lawsuit by the family of an 8-year-old boy who was killed in a gas explosion in May. The gas and electric company confirmed on Thursday that it had settled the lawsuit with the family. The lawsuit alleged that the company had failed to properly maintain its gas lines, causing the family's house to explode, killing the boy. A second lawsuit was filed by the family of another boy who was injured while walking by the house during the explosion. That lawsuit remains open, according to the family's attorney.
