A civil rights lawsuit has been filed against the California Highway Patrol by a woman who was punched by one of its officers earlier this month. The lawsuit alleges that the highway patrol officer used excessive force against 51-year-old woman during a traffic stop on July 1 and that the agency conspired to "suppress the facts" of the incident. Video footage of the incident show the officer pinning down the woman by the side of her car and landing at least nine blows. The report of the incident states that the officer was attempting to prevent the plaintiff from running into traffic and that she was impaired.

Oregon's Attorney General filed a lawsuit on Thursday accusing the makers and marketers of the energy drink 5-hour Energy of making false, deceptive and unsubstantiated claims about their energy shots. The lawsuit states that while the company claims to use "a unique blend of ingredients that provide consumers with benefits such as energy, alertness, and focus...the only significant effect from the product comes from its concentrated dose of caffeine." Oregon is one of several states currently targeting 5-Hour Energy in a lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed in Portland, Oregon and names Living Essentials LLC and its parent company, Innovation Ventures LLC, as defendants.

The University of Connecticut has agreed to pay $1.28 million to settle a lawsuit by five current and former students who allege the university mishandled their sexual assault cases. The lawsuit accused the school of being in violation Title IX, which guarantees all students the right to an education free from the violation of their human and civil and rights. While the university denies the claims, it states that the settlement "was reached to avoid the lengthy and expensive process of litigating the disputed claims at trial." The amounts to be paid to each plaintiff range from $25,000 to $900,000.

A California man has filed a whistleblower lawsuit against a stem cell research and development company alleging that he was fired after voicing concerns about potentially dangerous manufacturing practices. The lawsuit was filed this week in Alameda County Superior Court and contends that the plaintiff was terminated from his senior management position at StemCells after voicing concerns about the "dangers/defective products that the company was releasing into the commerce stream for human clinical trials." The plaintiff had been hired by the company in December to oversee the facility where stem cell cultures are cultivated for clinical trials. A Chicago man has filed a proposed class action lawsuit seeking $100 million from a company involved in a fraudulent red-light traffic scheme. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of anyone who paid a fine for a red light violation issued by the city from 2003 to 2013 while Redflex Traffic Systems was in charge of the program. Cited among the lawsuits allegations is a bribery scheme, including lavish company-paid vacations for the former city transportation official.
