Federal Watchdog Probes 37 Claims of Whistleblower Reprisal at VA

The U.S. Office of Special Counsel, a federal body that protects government employees from improper employment practices, including backlash against whistleblowers, announced it is investigating 37 allegations of VA reprisal against whistleblowers in 19 states. The VA has been under scrutiny lately for delays in patient care, sparked in part by a retired whistleblower's complaint. Not all 37 complaints are related to that issue, the office said.

Oregon Man Files Suit Over Brutal Racial Profiling

spacer image

An African-American man in Oregon has filed a lawsuit alleging he was the victim of assault by two police officers during an incident of racial profiling. The man's lawsuit claims that he was approached by the two officers while riding his bike near his home in Hillsboro. The police officers proceeded to beat the plaintiff and hit him with their stun guns, without provocation, the lawsuit claims. The plaintiff was then arrested and charged with interfering with an officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. The lawsuit seeks economic, non-economic and punitive damages from the two officers and the City of Hillsboro, as well as an injunctive relief which would prevent the city from racial profiling.

A settlement has been reached in a sexual abuse lawsuit filed by a 44-year-old man who was sexually abused by a Catholic priest back in 1987. As part of the settlement, the plaintiff has been released from the confidentiality agreement he signed in 1988, barring him from speaking of the abuse. The plaintiff filed the lawsuit in 2012 seeking to be released from the confidentiality agreement after trying to help another victim of sex abuse at the hands of a priest. The priest who sexually abused the plaintiff pleaded guilty in 1987 and was sentenced to six months in a facility for clerics who are sex offenders.

NC Court: Woman Can't Sue Over Medical Examiner Errors

The NC Court of Appeals ruled unanimously Tuesday that a grieving mother cannot sue the state because a medical examiner conducted a flawed investigation into her son’s death. The three-judge panel said the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services is immune from liability because medical examiners work for the public and have no duty to individual families.

$100M NuvaRing Settlement Finalized

spacer image

A $100 million settlement involving NuvaRing, a birth-control device linked to sometimes-fatal side effects, will stand now that the vast majority of claimants have chosen to opt into the agreement, those involved in the lawsuits said Thursday. U.S. District Judge Rodney W. Sippel of St. Louis approved the settlement in February, but NuvaRing maker Merck & Co. had the right to abandon the deal if less than 95 percent of eligible claimants opted in.
