The Police Department of Levelland, Texas and several of its officers have been dropped from a $5 million lawsuit over the shooting death of a local resident. The lawsuit was filed by the widow of the 55-year-old man who was fatally shot by officers responding to a disturbance call. An autopsy report showed that while the man also had a number of stab wounds, the gunshot wounds were the cause of his death. The police filed a motion on July 22 to release them from the lawsuit citing qualified immunity. After U.S. District Judge Sam Cummings granted the motion, the city was left as the lone defendant in the lawsuit.
