Obama administration officials are preparing to implement a controversial two-year-old executive order that will give agencies greater ability to deny federal contracts to companies with labor-law violations. Once the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces executive order is fully implemented, potential contractors must report violations covering 14 workplace protections from the previous three years.

Dallas Doc Hit With $19.7M Verdict After Patient Death

A Dallas jury awarded $19.7 million on Wednesday to the family of a woman who died after sustaining brain damage while being treated at the same hospital where she worked as a surgical technician, finding her doctor had been negligent. A unanimous jury found Dr. Jennifer M. Burris and her employer, Acute Surgical Care Specialists PLLC, liable to the late Katina Clark and Clark’s family.

Fla. Appeals Court Restores Tobacco Cos.' $5M Punishment

A Florida appeals court on Wednesday reinstated a combined $5 million punishment doled out by a Florida jury against R.J. Reynolds and Philip Morris for their role in the death of a smoker, overturning its previous ruling that had cut that punitive damages award. Ruling against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Philip Morris USA and Liggett Group, a Florida jury in 2010 had awarded each of Margot Putney’s three surviving children $5 million in loss of consortium damages, and added $2.5 million.
