More than 1 Million Pool Drain Covers Recalled

spacer image

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of about 1 million pool drain covers to check the accuracy of the flow rates. Drain covers are required on pools to prevent swimmers from being trapped under water by the drain suction. During an investigation, the agency discovered that many of the drain covers were certified using "faulty standards." CPSC officials recommend all private pool owners immediately contact their drain maker.  Gregory Korte, USA Today  05/27/2011

An officer with the Detroit Police Department has filed a lawsuit against her employer that claims the physical agility test required for the department's Special Response Team is gender-biased. The lawsuit claims male officers discouraged the plaintiff from taking the test and that the test itself contained physical criteria not related to the job. The plaintiff asked the department to re-evaluate the test, but it declined to do so.  Gina Damron, Detroit Free Press  06/01/2011

A Connecticut jury has awarded a local couple $58.6 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit, a record for a single incident of medical malpractice in the state of Connecticut. The lawsuit accused Dr. Richard Viscarello and his practice, Maternal-Fetal Care PC, of waiting to long to perform a cesarean section during the wife's 2003 labor, which caused the child to be born with permanent brain damage. The boy, now eight-years-old, suffers from cerebral palsy and is unable to eat, walk or talk.  Matthew Sturdevant, The Hartford Courant  05/26/2011

Suicide Result of Government Pressure, Suit Claims

A Utah doctor's suicide has prompted a lawsuit from his widow filed against the FBI and Bureau of Land Management over "excessive, overreaching and abusive treatment" toward the doctor. The doctor, his wife and their daughter were arrested for trafficking American Indian artifacts a few years ago. The doctor killed himself a day after being convicted of "the illegal possession of a 'bird effigy pendant' worth $1,000" in 2009. The agencies' treatment of the doctor, including accusing him of crimes he did not commit, drove him to suicide, the suit claims.  Staff Report, United Press International  05/29/2011
