Medical Device Recall Upped to Class 1

spacer image

The Food and Drug Administration has classified a recall of medical devices placed in women's breasts as the most serious type of recall, Class I, due to the high probability that the product will cause severe health risks. The Axxent FlexiShield Mini was recalled in February after it was discovered that the device left particles of tungsten in women’s breasts, which can cause misdiagnosis in mammograms. There is little research into if tungsten is dangerous to the human body.  Denise Grady, The New York Times  04/14/2011

A group of Jacksonville, Fla., firefighters have filed a lawsuit against the city and the fire union, claiming the department's promotional process is discriminatory. The suit, filed by 12 African-America firefighters, claims "union officials collected and shared promotional exam questions with white firefighters but not black firefighters, corrupting the promotional exam's supposed secrecy." The suit is seeking unspecified damages.  Paul Pinkham, Florida Times Union  04/14/2011

A lawsuit has been filed over the death of a college student in Texas who was run over by a monster truck outside a local strip club in March. The girl was leaving the club when she was hit by another patron in a custom 2003 Ford F-250 truck. The lawsuit claims Eric Crutchfield, the driver of the truck, was intoxicated to more than double the legal limit and that his vehicle was not "street legal." The lawsuit also accuses the club of serving him alcohol when he was "visibly intoxicated."  Chance Welch, Ft. Worth Star Telegram  04/14/2011
