Another Abuse Lawsuit Comes Against Kansas Priest |
| Another lawsuit has come against a former Kansas City priest and the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, alleging sexual abuse of four young boys in the mid-1970s. The lawsuit claims the priest abused the boys on camping trips and their home. In the 1990s, twice the diocese sent the priest for psychological evaluations, but both times he was allowed to return to the ministry. The diocese has also confirmed it has settled two other complaints against the priest in recent years. Mark Morris, Kansas City Star 02/23/2012 | Read Article: Kansas City Star |

BBP, Anadarko Liable for Violating Pollution Law, Judge Says |
| BP Plc and Anadarko Petroleum Corp. are liable for Clean Water Act violations, a judge ruled, allowing the U.S. to seek fines of as much as $1,100 per barrel of oil spilled in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. BP and Anadarko, partners in the doomed Macondo Well project, are responsible by law for polluting the water because they owned the well, U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier in New Orleans said yesterday. The ruling allows the government to seek fines without having to prove the issue of liability at trial. Bloomberg, Bloomberg 02/23/2012 | Read Article: Bloomberg |
Florida Court Tosses Philip Morris Smoking Verdict |
| A Florida appeals court tossed out a $2 million verdict in one of the thousands of smoker lawsuits against Philip Morris USA and other tobacco companies. The 4th District Court of Appeal ruled Wednesday that a trial judge should have found that the claim by Leon Barbanell was barred by the statute of limitations. Barbanell won a wrongful death lawsuit in 2009 against Philip Morris in his wife's 1996 lung cancer death. The four-year statute of limitations in smoking cases begins to run when the smoking-related health problems become apparent. The appeals court found evidence that Shirley Barbanell suspected health problems years before that. Associated Press, Miami Herald 02/23/2012 | Read Article: Miami Herald |
