Chrysler Recalls Charger Police Cars

Chrysler Group LLC has issued a recall of certain Dodge Chargers, year models 2011 and 2012, made as police vehicles due to electrical problems. The auto maker said the problems could lead to low-beam headlight failures as well as the loss of anti-lock breaks. The recall covers 9,688 vehicles, but Chrysler said it has not received any reports of accidents occurring due to the defects.  Jonathan Welsh, WSJ Blogs  02/13/2012

Nebraska Indian Tribe Files Suit Against Beer Brewers

spacer image

The Oglala Sioux Tribe in Nebraska has filed a lawsuit against a group of major alcohol brewers, distributors and retailers over alcohol "illegally" imported and sold on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The suit claims that retailers in Whiteclay, Neb., less than 100 yards from the reservation, knowingly assisted in the bootlegged resale of alcohol on the reservation. "The defendants have failed to make reasonable efforts to ensure their products are distributed and sold in obedience to the laws of the State of Nebraska and the Oglala Sioux Tribe," the suit says.  Staff Report, The Sacramento Bee  02/10/2012

A lawsuit filed over the death of an inmate in Sedgwick County, Kan., will go to federal trial this week. The lawsuit claims the inmate suffered from acute meningitis for days - vomiting, excreting blood, not eating - while being ignored by jail officials, despite complaints from inmates in nearby cells. The lawsuit alleges officers believed the man was "faking it" and he was not checked on by the jail physician in the final days before he died.  Tim Potter, Wichita Eagle  02/13/2012

$8 Million Awarded in Suit Over Nursing Home Care

A Kentucky jury has awarded $8 million to the estate of a local man who suffered broken legs while under the care of a Louisville nursing home. The lawsuit claimed the man's legs were broken in 2008 and that Treyton Oak Towers nursing home officials attempted to cover the incident up by altering medical records. The man died in a hospital about a month later, but the suit did not accuse the nursing home of causing his death.  Andrew Wolfson and Jason Riley , Louisville Courier Journal  02/13/2012

Two New York women have filed a lawsuit against the city and the NYPD after they were pepper-sprayed by officers during an Occupy Wall Street march in September. More Survivors Join Shipwreck Lawsuit

A group of almost 40 additional survivors will reportedly join in a lawsuit filed against the Costa Concordia cruise line over the shipwreck disaster that occurred in January. The original suit, with only six plaintiffs, was seeking $10 million in compensatory damages and $450 million in punitive damages. Lawyers say the punitive amounts will remain the same, but the lawsuit will be asking for greater compensatory damages.  Hannah Sampson, Miami Herald  02/14/2012
