Texas Tribune Daily Brief | | Two Athletes File Suit Over University's Fake Classes | | Two student athletes from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., have filed a lawsuit accusing the school of creating fake classes in order to keep student athletes eligible. The scheme, which was kept under wraps for 18 years, was exposed in 2011. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages for the athletes affected by the scheme and calls for a commission to "review, audit, assess, and report on academic integrity in NCAA-member athletic programs and certify (the colleges provide) comparable educations and educational opportunities to athletes and non-athletes alike." The lawsuit, filed on behalf of 76-year-old Patricia Mincey, alleges that Honda and Takata concealed potentially dangerous defects in Takata airbag systems for more than a decade. On June 15, Mincey ran a red light going about 20 mph in her 2001 Honda Civic and collided with an SUV.
