Dentist Forced Patients Into Silence About Her Performance, Suit Claims

spacer image

A New York man has filed a lawsuit against a local dentist, claiming she forced him to sign an agreement "not to bash her online" before she would work on the man's tooth. In his lawsuit, the plaintiff states the doctor also billed him $100 a day after he posted a negative review of her on the Website Yelp.com. The contract, the suit says, violates patients' rights to free speech and is a breach of dental ethics.  Bill Hutchinson , New York Daily News  12/01/2011

The Clorox Company has agreed to settle a $200,000 lawsuit accusing the company of deceiving customers by "selling partially filled bottles of some bleaches." The suit targeted two specific bleach products sold at retail stores around the state.  Rick Hurd, San Jose Mercury News  12/01/2011

Suit Filed Against Contact Lens Maker

A lawsuit has been filed against contact lens maker Cooper Cos. by investors who claim the company downplayed problems surrounding a recall, temporarily inflating the stock's value. According to the suit, the company "downplayed the August recall by boosting its stated expectations for its 2011 revenues," while high-ranking officials dumped their stock and made millions. The suit is seeking to represent anyone who bought Cooper stock between March and November of this year.  Matthew Daneman, Rochester Democrat & Chronicle  12/01/2011

Nueces County could join a group of Texas counties suing Bank of America and a related corporation over unpaid courthouse filing fees. Nationwide, counties are claiming that a mortgage database created by banks is cheating the counties out of billions of dollars in filing fees. Dallas County is leading the charge with a class-action suit against the bank and Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems Inc. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins told NPR his county has lost about $100 billion in filing fees.  Mark Collette, Corpus Christi Caller Times  12/01/2011

State Farm Rate Hikes, Higher Deductibles in Texas

spacer image

State Farm Insurance on Thursday was authorized to switch many of its 1.2 million homeowner policies to a higher deductible. TDI Commissioner Elanor Kitzman, who took office in August, found no reason to reject the increases. State Farm sought the changes in September. The new minimum deductible is 1 percent of a home's insured value, instead of a flat rate. Critics say a higher minimum deductible means less coverage. Kitzman also allowed an average 10 percent increase in homeowner rates. State Farm says higher discounts will reduce the actual increase to an average 1.4 percent.  Associated Press, Austin American Statesman  12/01/2011
